Yes, a Mass Effect movie is in the works and has been for a few years now.

Legendary Pictures bought the film rights for Mass Effect awhile ago. I should mention the the studio has a great reputation in regards to developing properties/projects they purchase the rights to, as in they have never bought the films rights to a project and not made the movie. Bioware officially announced the project on May 24th 2010. Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni, and Avi Arad are producing, with BioWare's own Casey Hudson serving as an executive producer. (UPDATE: It's unlikely that Hudson will still be involved in the project since he parted ways with Bioware back in August of 2014.) Mark Protosevich (Thor) was originally brought onboard to pin the script, but has since been replaced by screen writer Morgan Davis Foehl. In an interview with BadAss Digest Protosevich made the following comments in regards to his time writing for the project:

“I wrote a couple of drafts and then they brought on a new writer… When I was on it I was definitely adapting the first game. That story, it was very much the first game. And that was the approach.”

“It was the first game adaptation I did and it will probably be the only one. They’re hard. I will freely admit it was hard. Because – especially with ‘Mass Effect’ - there’s just so much material. Narratively, with the game, you’re talking about nine, ten hours of narrative you’re jamming into two hours.

“I hope they pull it off. I’d love to see a ‘Mass Effect’ movie. I think I did some good work, but even I’ll admit I didn’t pull it off.”

After giving fans mixed messages Legendary Pictures has confirmed that the movie will be an adaptation of the 1st Mass Effect game. The production on the film is moving very slowly but according to LP and Ari Arad the project is still alive. According to sources at the studio we are looking at a 2017/2018 debut for the film. It appears they are saving the best for last with other video game adaptations coming sooner like Uncharted and Metal Gear Solid. which producer Ari Arad is said to be involved in all.

How well the upcoming video adaptation of the highly popular World of WarCraft does at the box office will be a pretty good indicator of how much longer fans will have to wait for Mass Effect The Movie or if they scrap the project all together. It would seem that Bioware is taking it's time with The Mass Effect movie as to see the story and character faithfully adapted, this only makes sense in light of fan outrage over ME 3's ending. I say let them take their time and give us a movie as great as the games. That is all we know for now.

Which would you rather see on the big screen maleshep or Femshep? Weigh in in the comments below.
