Today during a panel at Star Wars Celebration with director Gareth Edwards, LucasFilm president Kathleen Kennedy and the Story Group’s Kiri Hart we learned new details about the first upcoming Star Wars standalone film Rogue One.

For starters all non-episodic films will officially be referred to as “Anthology” films as shown in the pic above. Kennedy spoke about how the idea of making non-episodic Star Wars films was first suggested by George Lucas himself saying, "He was “really interested in exploring all the stories that might exist within the universe."

The plot details of Rogue One were also revealed during the panel and are as follows,

“Rogue One” will revolve around “A band of resistance fighters who unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans” The events in Rogue One will take place after Revenge of the Sith but before A New Hope. Rogue One will be going for a realistic feel, the film is going for the feel of war films such as Zero Dark Thirty and Saving Private Ryan" says director Gareth Edwards.

Apparently the idea for the film came about when Industrial Light and Magic’s chief creative officer (and co-creator of Photoshop) John Knoll was encouraged to pitch the story idea he had been telling for years to Kennedy. After a 10 minute pitch to Kennedy she was sold and agreed it would make a fantastic standalone film.
